Revelation

Revelation is known as the last book of the Bible and as a very confusing, and kinda scary prophetic book. It features a dragon, horsemen, and an apocalypse, while calling out churches, and other bizarre things. This is the revelation that most are familiar with. But it’s not what we’re talking about.

What is Revelation

The entire book of Revelation is based on something that was revealed to a man named John. It was revealed to Him by God, and was played an important role in encouraging people in the second coming of our Lord, Jesus. But in all of the craziness of the book, one of the most important things to note is revelation itself.

We see the word a few other times throughout scripture, but it’s not a common word. At its most simple definition, it is just a “uncovered” or “unveiled” truth. Similar to a mystery that’s been solved, or a secret that’s been revealed. The word refers simply to some sort of truth that has become known to us.

For example, it has been revealed to us by God that Jesus Christ is Lord. If you have given your life to Christ, you know Him as Lord, and it’s because you have became aware to that truth. It has been revealed to you, whether through an experience with Him, or some other way.

Revelation of Truth

Another way to look at this is by looking through fog. When there’s a really foggy night, it can be hard to see what’s in front of you, and especially what’s on the other side of the fog. But when the fog clears, you are able to see what’s on the other side, and what’s probably been on the other side all along.

That may be a weird way to describe it, but I hope you can see what I’m getting at. While the fog may be covering your vision, it’s not changing the reality of what is really behind the fog. What was behind it before, will be there when the fog subsides. The fog is just a covering for the truth.

Revelation comes when the fog, or the veil, is lifted and when are able to see the truth of what’s behind the fog. It’s when the truth is revealed to us, and it comes once the veil has been lifted.

The Purpose of Revelation

We will get into the how to, and such of actually receiving revelation from the Lord soon, but before that, we need to understand the purpose of revelation.

God’s ways and His nature are far above our understanding. They go far above our human wisdom, and are much more complex than we can imagine. But He wants to reveal Himself to us, and He wants us to have a deeper understanding of who He is.

”-so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19).

His desire is for us to know and comprehend His amazing character and love. He wants to fill our lives, and take up residence in our hearts. All this is done, through the removing of the veil, and the uncovering of the truth. The truth of Him must be revealed to us, by Him, and it is that truth, that changes us.

Watchman Nee said this,

”God will answer all our questions in one way, and one way only. Namely, by showing us more of His son.”

It is by the revelation of Him and His son, that we ought to live our lives. Thus, the purpose for revelation is clear. It is simply for God to uncover more of who He is, to us, that we may be transformed into His image.

Final Thoughts

The mysteries of God can never be completely revealed, and may never will be, even in Heaven. But the Lord does want to reveal more of Himself to us, and by doing so, wants to reveal the mysteries of faith and many other incredible things.

But, the veil must first be removed, and we must also receive the truths that the Lord seeks to reveal to us. In this, we can know more the breadth, length, height, and depth of the love and character of God.

”But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
